Which fuel do you think holds most promise for the future - hydrogen, ethanol, solar, wind, hydroelectric, or another?

Solar Power

Every part of the Earth's surface gets some sun, it's free, and it isn't going to run out any time soon. Small wonder that many people think it makes sense to use it. In a way, we always have used it. Plants use solar energy to grow. We then either eat those plants ourselves, feed them to animals and then eat or use animal products, or use the plants for fuel or building materials such as timber. But we have never used more than a fraction of the solar energy that falls.

True, some places get more sunshine than others. Some places see sunshine all summer and only darkness all winter, like Barrow, Alaska. Some get more cloud and rain than others. Solar power could not therefore be the sole source of power for most unless they had big storage systems, whether batteries or some other form. Many people who generate their own solar power sell the excess to their power company when the sun is shining and buy back electricity at night. This saves them form having to have huge banks of batteries themselves. Producing our own electricity can save the wasteful losses from long power grid transmission lines.

There are several ways of harnessing the sun's power, for example:

  • Photovoltaic cells have been used to power calculators and used as roof tiles; they turn sunlight to electricity.
  • Passive heating: houses are designed to face the sun and with large glass windows to trap the heat.
  • Water heating: water pipes can be painted black and exposed to the sun so that they heat up.

Costs of solar panels and tiles and other materials are coming down, and as the cost of oil and therefore electricity from oil rises, the relative savings from using solar energy will increase. Governments and even power companies can help. Some power companies have found it cheaper to find ways of saving electricity than to build a new power plant. Also, the electricity from solar power during the office/factory hours can save them having to fire up extra, less economical plants to meet peak demand. Another benefit of home-produced power is that we do not have all our eggs in one basket - if the grid or a power plant fails or is attacked, we should still have at least some power.

Solar power will never be enough to power a nation because the amount of sunshine is so variable, but it can be a valuable part of a multi-fuel strategy. There are some pollution concerns in the fabrication of solar panels and the extraction of the raw materials, but once they are up and running they create no pollution.

UK approves wind farm, funds tidal, solar projects

Britain is to have a new wind farm at Scout Moor near Manchester and to invest in tidal and solar projects. Even so, Britain may not meet its renewable energy targets by 2010.

Senate Bill Would Double Ethanol Use

Despite oil companies' objections, a Senate committee approved legislation mandating greater use of corn-based ethanol and other renewable fuels in gasoline, doubling ethanol production by 2012.

Bush Pushing Hydrogen Fuel As Alternative

President Bush again asked Congress to pass a wide-ranging energy bill. He saw hydrogen as a fuel of the future, though it currently costs twice as much as premium gasoline.

World needs more than sea walls to stop floods

The Netherlands, a low-lying country with considerable experience of holding back the sea, says that higher and stronger dykes won't be enough against the elevated sea levels that global warming is expected to result in. An international conference on flood defenses in the Netherlands was told that dykes would need to be moved further from rivers to give flood water more room and flood plains would need to be lowered, amongst other measures.

Arctic Leaders Appeal Over Global Warming

Indigenous leaders from various parts of the Arctic have traveled to Europe to ask Europe to do more to combat global warming and to help their people. They want a share of the proceeds of oil drilling, protection of their traditional lands, and only sustainable development.

China's Yellow River plagued by pollution

Much of the Yellow River is unsafe for drinking or swimming thanks to pollution, including sewage, industrial waste and fertilizers. Fragmented efforts at cleaning it and other rivers up has not been enough to make the water drinkable in a country where many do not have access to clean water. The use of the river for hydroelectric power is also expanding and there is a plan to send some of its water north.

Small Ky. Town Wants Reservoir Cleaned Up

Residents of Loyall, Kentucky want the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to clear up a mile-long channel of water that they left, which has become a stagnant breeding ground for mosquitoes, etc.

Cold War-era uranium byproduct waste is being trucked from the former Fernald plant just outside Cincinnati, Ohio, to a site near the Texas-New Mexico line.

The Puente Hills fault has resulted in earthquakes of up to 7.5 in the past, and as it runs under Los Angeles and the suburbs a repeat of such a quake would be unusually costly in terms of both lives and property.

Ivory Coast's elephants seek peace abroad

Many Ivory Coast elephants have chosen to become refugees from war in neighbouring countries. They had already suffered from ivory poaching, habitat destruction and fragmentation.
